The room was small but clean and well designed. The king bed was very comfortable. There was a window with a view of a building across Powell Street. Since the window didn't open, we couldn't see anything other than the building. I thought that for the price--even with a discount--the room would be bigger. The foyer was a grand entrance and you cannot beat the location.

While the hotel is very well situated on Union Square, the hotel itself feels run down, which may explain the very reasonable hotel rates. The rooms and closets are small. My bathroom was so tiny, I asked to be moved to another room. The front desk was very accommodating and I ended up on the 19th floor with a better/larger room. That said, I would prefer a more contemporary hotel next time I go to San Francisco.

Traveling with 2 young children on Mother's Day weekend, I was very upset that our confirmed 2 bed room was exchanged for a 1 bed handicapped accessible room. And, only after a heated exchange, did the front desk person agree to give a roll away bed at no charge. At one point the person suggested we cancel our reservation. In addition, their signature dressed doorman never offered to assist us or find help for our luggage. We carried all the luggage up the 15 or so steps up to the main lobby. I would highly recommend booking with one of the many neighboring hotels instead. I will be staying San Francisco again in the very near future, but not here.

  • Yes, overall a great experience. We LOVED the doorman!

Although an older hotel, it was clean and cozy. We had a none smoking room that was great. It was very quiet on our floor/wing. The room was a little small and we didn't face the square, but the staff was great. Our bathroom had some wall paper peeling and there was no coffee available in the room although we could order room service. The evening meal next door to the hotel was fabulous and the service good as well. Union Square is only a short block away and there is a great place right across the street to eat breakfast. The day was beautiful and the shopping and people watching fun. We even got to observe the ice skaters and the lights being strung on the Xmas tree in the square.
