I stayed at the Powell for 5 nights and experienced the following: - the wireless internet did not work. I could sometimes get an intermittent signal in the lobby, but not in my room. Other guests I spoke with experienced the same so it was not just my room - my smoke detector started to beep at 6:30am one night. I requested that they fix it, but it happened again the next morning - one of the 2 elevators stopped working for one of the five days, which caused long delays waiting for the elevator - it rained while I was there and there were multiple leaks into the lobby area, my room stayed dry - at 4:30am the second night of my stay some staff of the hotel had a loud discussion outside my room - I was travelling with a party of 4 other people, we all booked rooms with queen beds. One of the members of my party was given a room with a single bed, the rest of us had double beds - one member of my party had a room with a very noisy heater, they turned it off and brought a portable space heater which solved the problem - the security card readers at the lobby entrance did not work, anyone who buzzed the intercom was let in Overall it was not a good experience. It is a very old building and not well maintained. The staff were not particularly courteous and did not appologize for any of these inconveniences, everything seemed to be normal and expected for them. I would not stay again.

Found live bed bugs in my bed. Inappropriate response to a major health code violation. In general the room was not cleaned properly to the level of any hotel I have ever staying in. Updated lobby hides a dirty old, hotel. Would not stay again. Ruined my vacation.

We arrived and had to wait in a long line to check in, during which time the two clerks joked about other guests in the hotel. The room was very small but comfortable and clean; just what I was looking for. My only issue with the room was that there was very little water pressure in the shower. The location was great with the BART, trolley, and shopping and dining nearby. The cafe on the main floor was perfect for breakfast or a quick lunch on the run. Parking was on the expensive side but not ridiculous. Checkout was a breeze. Overall a very nice stay. I would return.

In the past Ive always stayed at The Palace and W San Francisco. This trip I wanted to save some $$ and try something new. The Powell was perfect for what I required this trip. Clean and aesthetically pleasing, my ONLY complaint was the shower floor looked old (maybe it WAS old?!) but was clean in any event. Ask for an interior room with a fan as the noise from the street is too much if in an exterior room. But the location is the best selling point....right at Powell and Market!
