the rooms are SOOO small and squeezy!! i got a total shock. their queen size bed looked like single bed -.- only have 1 LAN cable in e room, for wireless access, need to go to the lobby. and their lift seems to be spoilt quite often. there was also no hot water in the room (in the lobby instead), no fridge either. "breakfast" is pathetic. although they got more ambience by getting someone to play the piano, i would rather they spend on getting better food for travelers its not as safe as palo alto.. my personal opinion thou. but 1 of their service staff was great! attended to all our queries with patience and smiles (:

I stayed at the Opal Hotel in August. What I found was the following o We found the area unsafe. The concierge desk told us not to walk at night around the neighborhood as it was a transient area o The front door was secured (needed your room key to get in)…I guess due to the transient population. o The rooms were small. We could barley moved around in the bathroom it was so small. o The hotel was not as close to attractions such as the Warf and union square as noted on the website Overall, the Opal is affordable, but at what cost? Would you rather spend a few extra dollars on a hotel on Market Street, or get mugged on the street at the Opal?

At check in the clerk advised us ( 2 women travellers) not to venture out at night in a large section of city streets right outside the hotel doors... we went to lunch and then looked down the side streets off Van Ness... very derelict area, with many street people sleeping or loitering around,. we felt very unsafe based on what we saw. Hotel staff were less than helpful in helping us arrange other accomodations... basically said "we have our money from travelocity so if you want to leave go ahead.. we have our money for the full stay." Travelocity was great... they rebooked us ...it took an hour but it worked out. Our cabbbie the next day said the hotel is one street off the red light transvestite area. this explains the warning from the clerk. The rooms at the Opal were clean , but very small especially the bathroom.. could barley get in to close the door... if it was in a better neigborhood we would likley have stayed there.
